SRT (Superficial Radiotherapy)

The technology used in this new treatment for skin cancer has actually been around for over 50 years! The Sensus SRT radiation treatment involves a specific dose of precise superficial radiotherapy that penetrates only the skin’s layers. The low-dose of radiotherapy it delivers safely destroys non-melanoma skin cancer cells.

We perform this skin cancer radiation treatment right in our dermatology offices in The Villages and Leesburg. With brand new specialized equipment designed specifically for this purpose we can deliver optimum results without the negative side effects associated with other treatments.

For many of our patients, existing medical conditions make any type of surgery a serious health risk. That type of exposure is no longer necessary for patients with basal and squamous cell skin cancer. With the new SRT radiation treatment, skin cancer can be eliminated without the exposure to risk associated with surgery.

No Cutting

A more gentle approach to skin cancer, SRT doesn’t not involve any surgery or cutting of the skin. This eliminates many risks (including bleeding and infection), as well as the extended time for healing associated with surgery. A vast number of residents in The Villages and Central Florida are now on blood thinners. This is not a concern with SRT radiation treatments like it would be with surgery.

No Downtime

Because SRT is non-invasive there is no downtime associated with these treatments. No big bandages or painful recovery time here!

When we say non-invasive, we mean it. There is no pain or other side effects associated with SRT treatments. Because the radiation only penetrates the skin layers, there is no damage to other tissue. Therefore, there is no pain or risk of infection!

SRT Treatment for Keloids

Keloids are chronic tumors that form where the skin has experienced some type of trauma. Keloids have formed after orthopedic, gynecology, obstetrics and heart surgery. Sometimes, even plastic surgery patients have developed unsightly keloids. And often, scarring from chicken pox, acne, piercings, burns and other skin damage can also trigger the development of keloids.

Most people believe they simply have to live with keloids. However, Superficial Radiotherapy has been shown to be a highly effective keloid removal treatment, with a cure rate above 90 percent!

How is SRT Different?

Traditionally, keloid removal has involved several surgeries. And sadly, with surgery keloids have typically grown back at each new incision site. In fact, keloid tumors re-occurred in more than 90 percent of cases where surgery was employed. However, when surgical keloid removal has been followed by Superficial Radiotherapy, the recurrence of re-occurring keloid scarring drops dramatically to less than 10 percent.

The SRT-100™ delivers a precise, calibrated dose of Superficial Radiotherapy that only penetrates the skin layers. This low-dose of Superficial Radiotherapy safely destroys the abnormal cells that form keloids, maintaining smooth skin as the incision heals. This painless procedure can be performed right in our dermatology office in Leesburg or The Villages.  Patients usually undergo a series of multiple treatments depending on the incision site.

A study was conducted regarding the treatment of keloid scarring using Superficial Radiotherapy and was printed in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology (JCAD) magazine. This study shows that when the surgical removal of keloids is followed by treatment with Superficial Radio Therapy, the chances of the keloid scarring coming back are very minimal.
